I'm in the market for some MTB equipment, but I would like to find out which cycle shops in Gauteng you would recommend based on good service and good price?

In no particular order:

Finish Line Cycles in Kempton Park, for GT, Mongoose and Bianchi (probably can do more), speak to Arthur
Linden Cycles, I think Janine is the ladies name
Northcliff Cycles for Felt, speak to Alex

PM me if you are battling to find them.

Its really all about relationships and having a shop which understands your needs.

I know my LBS may not always be the cheapest for stuff, and certain non technical components you get from bigger guys like cajees and the lab if they are cheaper. your LBS gnenerally matches their price if you request.

Know your bike shop well, and have a good understanding with them, about your requiremnets.

that would be my final word.

My LBS has been mentioned in the list above, so no need to repeat.

Northcliff Cycles are the best. I dunno how their prices compare, but the service is excellent. And the atmosphere is always great in the shop...

+1 for Mike's Bikes. Not the cheapest, but they really know their product when it comes to MTB. They're the only shop that gets to touch my bike for servicing, and I also don't shop anywhere else anymore. They treat the customers so well, and know their product so well, that the little bit extra you pay is justified.

You will not find a shop in SA that has "good" prices. Some might be better then others but never good and forget about great.

So it comes down to service.

Mike's Bikes (closed untill 5th of Jan)

Northcliff Cycles

Westrand Cycles

And that is basically the only ones I would recommend. All the others are either understaffed or have little kids trying to help you.

Thanks mampara

Yeah, I'm looking for a LBS that will provide me with expertise and good service, but at the same time won't rip me off with price. I do know that you generally won't find a shop with great prices.

But there are some names that keep reappearing it seems ;) So that helps tremendously!
