SA DH Champs Preview: Pottie rides the Hartbeespoort track

The South African National Downhill Championships take place at Hartbeespoort on Sunday 8 April. The venue is unique in South Africa as it has lift access via the Hartbeespoort Cableway, making it a breeze for the riders to reach the start line. Defending South African champion Johann Potgieter has been riding the course ahead of the race this weekend. Watch his course preview video below.

I rode this today and it's impossibly steep on some sections ....don't let the video fool you

First DH track in SA with lifts - and available to the public year round. Very exciting stuff, hopefully we will see more of this soon!

Well done Charl van Zyl for getting this off the ground!

That looks insanely fast. Am sure the video does it no justice, still like to have a go though. Can always walk right ....

Not so keen on the Superman either ...

Nicely done Pottie!

Pretty fun spotting all the sections where I ate dirt or hugged a tree.

Anxiously watching what this track will evolve into over time.

What the ave gradient and distance of this track? Video makes some sections look very flat.

Love all that rockiness!

from what I heard yester day it's about 1.8km with 370m of drop +-

Is the track accessible year round? Can you buy a day-pass for the gondola?

Robbow, Apr 03 2018 10:40

Very Enduro looking, and super tight in places.

Yeah, some sections look really akward.

Looks like a proper old school track in places - rocky, tight and slowish. Should be a good race.

I would have hit a lot of those trees...

yes and yes , although the month pass is only like 30% more

My strava tells me it was just under 2.0 km with an average time of 4 minutes according to Pottie.

Clipped quite a few. 800 wide bars are not really the best on this trail.

Slow until you hit 70% of the trail, then it kind of opens up, you can see further and the speed you pick up is really good.
