The new and improved SahmuraiSword

Nearly four years since it first entered the market, the original SahmuraiSword, that easy-to-use, simple-to-store and safe way of carrying a tubeless plug system on your bike, has undergone a dramatic upgrade. The improvements come on the back of rider feedback and continued internal R&D over the past years.

The system – essentially bar-plugs – allows you to store both the plug and reamer tool inside your handlebars. While this may sound simple, significant improvements have made this basic system that much better.

Here are the new features:

  • Soft, durable, impact-proof rubber compound
  • A counter-clockwise spiral twist ensures the lock-and-release mechanism fits tight and securely in the bar end.
  • A deep recessed pin and stable, yet flexible, base ensures safe and functional use.
  • Improved packaging that is tamper-proof and more eco-friendly

“The mechanism of twist to engage or release still remains an important function and separates us from cheaper copies,” explains the team behind the product.

“We have worked hard on the design process and taken customer feedback to heart,” they said. “Our original intent was to ensure the handlebar was protected, but as the impact to handlebars were much more than we anticipated, it was clear that a more durable material was required.”

According to the team, sealing the plug from the elements is also priority. “The flights of the updated version overlap in the front and back to ensure a good seal,” they said, adding that the updated product also fits easily into a greater variety of handlebars. “Small imperfections in the bar cavity does not influence fit, as in the past. Once the updated version is removed from the handlebar, a simple dip in warm water will return the product to its original shape as it is made from rubber that has memory,” they concluded.

Good of them to admit that simpler is often better.

Mine cracked to pieces after a few prangs. So now they just sit in the tube you buy them in, in my bag. Which eliminates the point of them, but still works like a charm.

I always lost one as I pull on my bars when climbing and I would loosen it

I had the weirdest thing happen to me with these. Went riding, when riding back on a trail I had ridden in the opposite direction I see a sword on the ground, look at my bars and realize that one of mine is missing. Thinking damn I am lucky to have found it. When I get home I take them both out to fit them again properly and I notice that I now have two pluggers and no reamer. So I picked up someone else’s, after losing mine on the same ride, on a trail that maybe sees 5 okes on a good day.

Do they fit in the hollow section of the Cranks perhaps?

Yes they do, Mr Nino did it on his Spark for Epic 2017, you can see it one of the photos https://www.bikehub....-spark-rc-r6334

Please have an option for two plugs & no reamer

This and have the option to buy only one of the two, Luckily I lost only my reamer.

And my plugtool broke to pieces after my bike fell over once while standing next to a wall. Really hope this new design is better.

Dandre, Oct 12 2018 02:58

On my second set also. Really hope the price tag gets better. R350 for these was a bit harsh. The price for being cool i guess ;)

Is it new, or is it improved...?  Perhaps newly improved.  But not new and improved!

fanievb, Oct 15 2018 11:41

uhm ja nee.

insulation tape and the old school ryder plug kit

R80 and you are sorted (and you won't loose a R400 "new and improved tool")

GlennH, Oct 15 2018 12:08

Cool idea, pity they a total rip off. Hopefully part of the improvement is the price :P

cadenceblur, Oct 15 2018 12:12

cadenceblur, Oct 15 2018 12:12
