Epic Bike Check: Annika Langvad's Specialized S-Works Epic

Annika Langvad returned to the Absa Cape Epic after a brief hiatus with American partner Kate Courtney. The pair proved to be an unbeatable combination, winning the women's overall title and claiming seven of the eight stages in the 2018 race.

Annika's Specialized S-Works Epic has been customed painted to celebrate the songo.info organisation that is uplifting the Kayamandi community in Stellenbosch through cycling and education. In fact, this bike will be auctioned to the public after the Cape Epic to raise funds for the organisation.

The artwork includes a number of symbols relating to the work done by songo.info including the names of some of the kids benefitting from its work on the underside of the downtube.

Annika is riding a SRAM XX1 Eagle drivetrain with a Rotor 2INPower crankset and 34 tooth Rotor chainring. Stopping is controlled by Magura's MT8 Raceline brake set with Shimano XTR pedals propelling the crankarms.

Annika raced with a Specialized Command Post for the first three days of Epic. Right after we had taken these photos, her mechanic set about replacing it with a rigid carbon seat post. He explained that Annika likes the dropper post for confidence but believed that she would benefit more from the weight saving on the following day's stage. Funnily, he chuckled saying that he doesn't understand why as she is so powerful with or without the extra weight.

Annika has chosen Specialized's Fast Trak with a 2.3" wdith and GRID casing on the front wheel with a Renegade 2.1" GRID tyre displaying prototype markings on the rear. The wheelset is Roval's carbon rim Control SL with DT Swiss rear hub internals.

I've been getting this question a lot from these bike checks.

 

Our frame of reference is usually on bare bikes with quoted weights excluding any extras like pedals, bottle cages, sealant, spares, and spares containers. A full kitted race bike is always much heavier than one coming off the shop floor. Between 11 and 12 kg seemed to be the range at Epic for most pro bikes with all the extras strapped on. Bart Brentjens's bike being one exception but it's a hardtail.

 

Of course, the cross country bikes we looked at in Stellenbosch were much lighter without spares and the practical considerations of many hours of riding each day.

I was going to say this same bike was weighed at 10.2kgs at the XCO by GMBN during their review of the bike.

I ride an sworks myself and with experimentation of tyres i find the schwalbe Evo Skin can take 1kg off the weight of the fast track / renegade combination, largely because of the Grid side wall added weight. For the cape epic, it goes without saying that reliability is super crucial, so Grid and Snake skin tech is worth the extra 1kg.

REALLY?!? There is at least 1kg's of reliability and extra tyre on that bike. If you have a sub-12kg fully kitted dual-suspension bike, it is really light in my opinion.

Its still light - with all that extra stuff on it my enduro bike weighs closer to 17 kg :-)

I think the weight is quite respectable, given the added security of tyres and spares etc...like the mechanic says tho, you are pushing the same power with or without the added weight...it not like dropping a few grams will suddenly mean you can push out an added 200W...?

 

Yes you maybe use less power pushing a lighter bike up a climb, it all means nothing if you spend at least 10 minutes in a stage trying to patch holes in your lightweight tyres...

I think my reference point was that for my 2014 Epic, I was riding a 2009 a full aluminium Titus Racer X, no Carbon wheels, 3x9 and she came in at 11.8kg's. Granted I have no power meter and a dropper post but My Rocky 999 Element with pedals and Fast track tires still comes in at 10.4kgs. But then again I am never gonna win any category in the Epic ;-)
