Fuji Transonic Build!

Alastair_S1D's Photo Alastair_S1D 24 Aug 2017

Ola there everyone!

So about three weeks ago I had an incident with a car and I had to lay my much loved '10 KTM Strada LC5000 to rest for the last time.

Since then I have been searching for a replacement bike.

Recently I settled on a barely used Fuji Transonic 1.3 frame which the buyer sold due to it not fitting quite right.

I plan to build the bike up as follows.

Frame: Fuji Transonic 1.3 C10

Fork: Fuji FC-330

Seatpost: Oval Concepts Carbon aero

Front Derailleur: Shimano Ultegra FD-R8000-F

Rear Derailleur: Shimano Ultegra RD-R8000-SS

Crankset: Shimano Ultegra R8000 52/36 (172.5mm)

Cassette: Shimano Ultegra CS-R8000 11-28

Shifters: Shimano Ultegra ST-R8000

Brakes: Shimano Ultegra BR-R8010 and BR-R8010-RS

Chain: Shimano HG701

BB: Shimano BB72-41B press fit

Pedals: Shimano PD-R8000

Wheelset: Prime RR50 (they are already on their way!)

Handlebar: 3T Aeronova Team 44cm

Stem (not sure yet.)

Saddle: Fabric Scoop flat 142mm Pro/Ultimate

I'm pretty amped for this build. Should be able to rival the Foils and the Venges out there. :)

The only thing that has got me a bit worried is picking the right Stem and handle bar combination and  am hoping for a bit of input there.

I had a BG fit done for my Strada at West Rand cycles at the beginning of the year and I was super comfortable on it. Quite impressive considering that the Strada was second hand and was probably built better to suit the previous owner.

My Strada frame was a 55cm. Fuji is 54cm

Top tube length: Strada 550/ Fuji 545

Seat tube Length: Strada 550/ Fuji 520 (540 effective)

Seat Angle: Strada 74.5° / Fuji 73.5°

Head Angle: Strada 72.5° / Fuji 73°

Headtube Length: Strada 147mm / Fuji 135mm

Chainstay: Strada 410mm/ Fuji 405mm

Wheelbase: Strada 997mm / Fuji 974mm

My Strada had an Easton EC70 wing 44cm bar with a 100mm/6° stem.

I can't find much information on the reach and drop of the Easton bars though I might have to measure them myself. But what do you guys think would be the right Bar and stem combination to get a comfortable but still pretty aggressive fit on the transonic? I'll post pics of my BG report. And also I'll post pics as the build continues!

Please post it when it is done, I am a big fan of Fuji bikes. They are one of the most underrated brand available.

And UCI complaint too. I've never owned a bike wth UCI certification logo's on it before. Seems to add a bit of extra wow factor to me.

That is a good looking frame. Sorry about the crash with the car.

I don't know what kind of a rider you are but with a frame like that are you sure you want such small gearing? Did you have 52/36 on the KTM?

I had a 50/34 on the KTM paired with an 11-25 cassette. Will that extra tooth on the large end of a 53/39 be all that noticeable? It's only about 2%?

I won't lie. Originally the KTM was set up with a 12-27 and 50/34. And I spun out a lot. Especially when the group hit 60 or more. I found the jump to an 11 on the high end made a big improvement. (almost 10% in this case)

But I'm thinking that the 52 is still a bit bigger than what I am used too and won't be far from a 53 in terms of top end. But I still keep the climb-ability on the low end.

I sat down and measured the bars off of my KTM. They are Easton EC70 wings. They are 440mm wide. Approximately 110mm reach and approximately 135mm-140mm of drop.

Now I am trying to imagine what sort of difference the 3T Aeronova bars would make at 104mm reach and 127mm drop. Seems a bit tamer? But it doesn't look like it would be a big change. Should be fine with a 100mm stem you think? Cause I have been wondering about the correct stem length.

So a box of goodies arrived yesterday!IMG_20170901_180150_zpsgc4u6v1t.jpg

Oh yes can't wait to put this on the bike. And I finally get to use that 6800 cassette I bought a few years back.  (CS-6800 is identical to CS-R8000 in every way)

Loving this crank. Shimano cranks since 7800 have always looked good. The fat crank arm really gives you the impression that all your power Is going to go where it needs to!

Did fuji go back to standard bb, or is it still bb30 and you have to use a adapter? The sst was bb30 if I remember correctly.

How does the reach and stack compare between the two frames? The Aeronova is a bar with longer reach, but have also read that it is measured slightly different than other bars. Think it was a fairwheel comparison test where they measured all the bars the same way and they measured around 90mm for the reach. I presume the Fuji will have a slightly shorter reach and slightly lower stack

No breezer it's still a PF30 BB as far as what I can tell on the fuji website. I got a SM-BB72-41B BB with the groupset. Don't think it will work the dimensions don't seem right. But I've already got adaptor cups for the BB for a normal threaded BB, (you might be able to notice it in some of the pics) so yeah.

You probably better off buying from Oz... Might be cheaper too... PM Cippo... He got a 3T Bar, that he bought abroad.
