New Bike rack options

lyslexic's Photo lyslexic 12 Sep 2017

I've been using a saris bones 3 for the past 5years and it works well. I got a new car and the top clips don't fit into the boot properly and the side clips don't work at all due to the angle of the boot.

I called around and the price of a tow bar is 11500 ( removable kind ) and roof rack is 7600 with the pro ride.

I've ruled the roof rack off, because I'm careless and will drive the basement with the bike on.

Does anyone know of a cheaper tow bar place in cape town or a boot rack that does not use side clips ?

Just go with the normal fixed tow bar. If you are going to be hitching the bike rack you are probably never going to remove the tow ball....ever, so it is a waste. Depending on the car, fixed is usually around 5K. It also helps protect your bumper if someone is careless enough to give you a nudge!

I think you will need to give the make and model of your car for others to comment.

They want 8500 for the normal kind. I think it spoils the look of the car with a towbar, hence the want for the removable kind.

That sounds about right for a removable one. I remember when I was looking to put a towbar on my Golf I also wanted removable and the cheapest I could find (Pretoria) was R9000. That's why I ended up settling for a non-removable one from Autobar for R3200. And upside is it saved my bumper when a friend reverse parked the car into a wall haha.

I have a removable towbar .

I use it almost every weekend and find it no hassle to attach/remove .

Have to agree , my car looks much better without it attached .....

We always have a fixed tow bar, otherwise there will be nothing for me to smash my shins on when I walk around the back of the car.

Got in touch with Saris - They say that they don't make a rack that fits my boot.

Got in touch with Brink Towbars - They say that there isn't a towbar for my car as it is not a towing vehicle. Whatever that means.

Pity you in CPT. I have amate that could most likely get you a removable tow bar for mcuh less than what you were quoted.

I got a removable for a Golf 7 GTI for R7500. works wonders.

Not a towing vehicle??  The only reason a car can't tow is if it has a CVT gearbox.  Even then a mate got a towbar fitted to his Honda Jazz CVT for his bike rack.  As long as you don't tow a trailer it should be fine.

I have a removable tow bar that I never remove..... It's saved me a couple of times already, including when somebody dinged into the back of my car at a robot.  The front end of his car had bad cosmetic damage, I didn't even have a scratch.  It's also shielded the car from my own stupidity on occasion

I am no expert when it comes to cars, but I have a Toyota C-HR which has a CVT gearbox and Toyota fitted a towbar on it themselves. I would hope that this means I can use the car to tow something...

As I understand it, the question of whether a vehicle can tow something and how heavy that "something" can be is determined by the manufacturer. Some vehicles are not certified to tow anything... or at least, so I have been told.
